Black powder was used worldwide in the 1800s, including by British Redcoats and the United States Army. Today's black powder pistols are well-made replicas of original designs or modern pistols built for black powder. The most famous is the Colt Walker, designed by Texas Ranger Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker and inventor Samuel Colt.

Black Powder matches are Pistol Australia events shot at 25 and 50 metres. SSPC ACT shoots the 13-shot 25 metre match. Hitting the target accurately takes real skill, which is much of the appeal.
